ORPHEE MICKALAD

MAINTAINING MOMENTUM FOR A SUCCESSFUL RE-ELECTION

WE’D HELPED ORPHEE WIN ONCE BEFORE.

How did that happen? We thought we had freshness, hope, and the element of surprise on our side. So how, for a follow-up campaign after only a year and a half, would we keep that momentum?

Orphee was still the same candidate with most of the same promises. There was a lot that was already working.

WE NEEDED TO RUN A SIMILAR, BUT DIFFERENT CAMPAIGN.

AFTERSHOCKS.

Every step forward was an act of pushing the limits. We were on the bleeding edge campaign video conceptualization, beyond the expectations of our gear, and just a touch outside Orphee’s comfort zone.

we had to get closer.

I love Palmy, it’s where I belong.

ART
CONCEPTS.

Inspired by contemporary works in the short film space as well as a TikTok trend that exploits action/reaction simultaneously depicted, we employed triple splitscreen in Orphee’s final video.

THE
DREAM.

Not only could we pack many moments and layers of information into sixty seconds, but we could indulge in extended shots and a seamless, re-watchable loop. This cinematic expression enabled us to communicate something about Orphee’s connection to the city which was not previously possible. When joined with a observational-style phone interview, and small but legible centered subtitles, we produced an impactful video with an easy onboarding for social media’s audiences, but that dug deep into the fundamentals of local body politics.

WORKING TITLES;
WORKING.

In late 2019, John, Orphee, and Oliver crowded around an old gaming computer in a flat on The Terrace, and opened a Premiere Pro project. The working title: Team Victory. No question we jumped the gun, because there were still six months and two major cinematic videos ahead of us.

Three years on, after an absolute majority win in the by-election and top-five standing in the 2022 election, the word victory is nothing if not true. At R + S we are incredibly proud of our work, and believe in the impact that we made in proving Orphee an upstanding, relevant, and exciting candidate.

Orphee, and the Palmy community, cannot be understated however. It is the people of Palmerston North who graciously hosted us and agreed to appear in many of our videos; it is the farmers, the store owners, and happenstance people on the street; it is Orphee’s friends and family and family friends who supported us in making this all happen. And it is Orphee, as a well-rounded, driven, and team-focused candidate that gave us something to believe in.

Kia ora and thank you, all.
